The Thai-Myanmar border crossing at Htee Khe in Tanintharyi region has reopened, authorities in Kanchanaburi province on the Thai side have announced.
The Thai Border Affairs Committee and Kanchanaburi authorities have been discussing the reopening of the crossing since June, and trade routes have been reopened since the first week of July, he added.
On the other hand, the Thai Border Affairs Committee has not allowed Thai citizens to travel to the Dawei area due to security concerns due to fighting along the Thai-Myanmar border, according to some people familiar with the situation on the ground.
However, people from the Myanmar side are allowed to enter Kanchanaburi with a card issued by the Thai Immigration Service (LAWKA).
The Thai-Myanmar border will be closed in May 2025. The Karen National Union (KNU) has seized the Htei Khe strategic camp of the military council in the Karen National Liberation Army (KNLA) and People’s Defense Forces (PDF) in the 4th Brigade area.
The Htei Khe border trading post has been closed for more than three months since April due to fighting in the Htei area.
On the other hand, some traders say that the Thai authorities have announced the reopening of the trading post after the fighting in the Htei area has stopped and the situation in the area has calmed down.
The BBC is still trying to contact the KNU about this situation.
The military council has not yet released any information about the Htei Khe border trading post.
